1. "The Money is in the List"
When people first get started in business, almost everyone hears the old marketing axiom: "The money is in the list."
Most business owners have no idea what that actually means. You sell products. You sell services. What does an email list have to do with making payroll or growing a company?
A common rule of thumb in direct marketing is that every active subscriber on your email list is worth roughly $1 per month in revenue. If you have 1,000 active people on your list, that is roughly $1,000/month in baseline revenue. If you have 10,000 people, that is roughly $10,000/month.
2. Why You Can't Buy an Audience
When beginners hear that, their first instinct is to look for a shortcut: "Why don't I just buy an email list?"
Years ago, people used to buy CDs on eBay with "1,000,000 email addresses" for $60. The math seemed incredible: pay $60 for a million emails, and make a million dollars a month. But when you blast an email to people who don't know you and never asked to hear from you, two things happen immediately:
- They report you as spam.
- Your internet provider and email account get shut down.
3. Websites vs. The 2-Page Lead Funnel
Look at the way most businesses set up their website:
They build a traditional site with a giant header menu, five navigation dropdowns, social media links, an "About" page, team bios, and dozens of links. This is why traditional websites leak traffic: when a visitor lands on the page, dozens of competing links and menus pull their attention in different directions. With too many places to click, they wander around, get overwhelmed by the choices, and leave without ever joining your list.
A Lead Funnel is the exact opposite. It is the simplest funnel in the world, consisting of just two pages:
01 The Squeeze Page
- "I will give you this free thing if you give me your email."
- Single input field for their email address.
- Zero header navigation or external links.
- One clear decision: get the free thing or leave.
02 The Thank You Page
- "Here is the free thing you asked for."
- Delivers the download link or video instantly.
- Introduces what to expect next.
- Sets up the next step in your business.
4. The Mountain: Understanding Your Dream Customer
To create a lead funnel that works, you have to understand who you are trying to attract.
Every business promises to get someone a result. Think of that result as the top of a mountain:
- If you are a dentist, the big result at the top of the mountain is a healthy, clean smile.
- If you are a fitness trainer, the result is losing 30 pounds and getting into peak shape.
- If you sell camping equipment, the result is enjoying a safe, memorable outdoor trip.
Your dream customer is the person standing at the base of that mountain who wants that result. But you don't ask someone standing at the base to jump all the way to the top of the mountain on day one. You don't pitch a cold stranger your most expensive service immediately.
Instead, you create bait (a Lead Magnet) that solves Step 1—the first micro-problem they face at the start of their journey:
For example, if you sell camping equipment, your bait might be: "The 5 Things You Must Have Before Camping This Weekend" or "The Top 10 Best Hidden Camping Spots in the Country."
Anyone who downloads that guide is, by definition, your dream customer—someone who is interested in camping. You just attracted your dream customer with relevant bait.
5. How This Benefits Your Business
When you set up a simple two-page lead funnel and drive traffic to your bait, you start building a customer list of people who raised their hand and asked to hear from you.
1. You Own the Asset: Unlike social media algorithms where your reach can be taken away at any time, your email list belongs to you.
2. $0 Cost to Communicate: Once someone is on your list, it costs you nothing to contact them. You don't have to keep paying ads to talk to the same person.
3. Sales on Demand: Whenever you have a new product, an open appointment slot, or a special offer, you can send one email to your list and generate customers immediately.
